University of Miami research shows that a combination of flower extracts may be a safe and effective stress reducer. Scientists found that anxious college students became significantly less stressed after they swallowed 20 drops of liquid containing rock rose, impatients, clematis, Star of 0f Bethlehem and cherry plum, with no side effects. One theory is that this botanical mixture increases the body’s production of calming endorphins. This herbal aid is sold under the name Rescue Remedy, but talk to your doctor about any herbal supplement, particularly if you are on medical drugs.
Another power herbal aid that is reported to relax the body to sleep has been shown to much more potent than used only for regular sleep. A new University of Texas study shows that Melatonin may be the perfect supplement for surgery. Patients who took 15 milligams (mg) of melatonin 50 minutes before surgery required 35 percent less anesthesia than those given a placebo. This led to fewer side effects, such as nausea and fatigue. “Melatonin pre-stimulates receptors in your brain that react to anesthesia, so the drugs do not have to work so hard”, says Keith DeOrio, M.D., the Men’s Health alternate-medicine advisor.
“If you are scheduled for surgery, ask your M.D. about taking 2 mg melatonin for every 22 pounds you weigh”.
